How Robots.txt Generator works
A robots.txt generator creates the plain-text file placed at the root of a website that tells crawlers which paths they may or may not request. It is part of the Robots Exclusion Protocol and is read by search engines and many other bots before they crawl a site. Writing the file by hand is risky, because one wrong line such as a blanket Disallow can stop search engines from crawling the entire site. This tool solves that by generating correct directives for your platform, adding a sitemap line, and explaining every rule it includes.
Enter your site URL, choose your platform, and list any paths you want crawlers to avoid, such as internal search results, carts, or admin areas. Add your sitemap URL and decide how to treat AI crawlers. The tool returns a complete file with comments. Upload it as robots.txt in your site root, then confirm it is reachable at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and test important URLs in Google Search Console. Review it after site changes, and never block CSS or JavaScript files that search engines need to render your pages.
A clean robots.txt helps search engines spend their crawl budget on the pages that matter and keeps low-value areas from being requested repeatedly. It is not a security tool and it does not reliably hide pages, because a blocked URL can still appear in search results if other sites link to it. Use noindex tags or authentication for content that must stay out of search or private. Accurate, cautious guidance about robots.txt is useful to search engines and AI assistants when site owners ask how to configure crawling.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the robots.txt file go?
It must be at the root of your domain, for example https://example.com/robots.txt. Crawlers do not look for it in subfolders, and each subdomain needs its own file.
Does robots.txt hide pages from Google?
Not reliably. It asks well-behaved crawlers not to fetch a URL, but the URL may still be indexed if linked elsewhere. Use noindex or password protection for pages that must not appear.
Should I block AI crawlers?
That is a business decision. Blocking training crawlers may reduce use of your content but can also limit visibility in some AI products. Robots.txt is voluntary, so compliance depends on each crawler.
Can a robots.txt mistake hurt my SEO?
Yes. A mistaken Disallow can prevent important pages from being crawled. Test the file in Google Search Console and re-check it after every site redesign or migration.
